Urban Dynamics Institute (UDI) Director Budhendra “Budhu” Bhaduri has accepted an invitation to serve on the Geographical Sciences Committee (GCS) for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).
Bhaduri, also a Corporate Research Fellow and group leader for Geographic Information Science & Technology at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was selected for the position based on his expertise in geographic sciences (GIScience) and pioneering methods in geocomputation and high-resolution geospatial analysis. He will serve GSC for a term of two-and-a-half years from July 1. Bhaduri previously served on the NASEM’s Mapping Science Committee.
The GSC, currently sponsored by the National Science Foundation, provides scientific, technical, and policy advice and recommendations to government and society. The committee focuses on critical challenges for human populations in changing environments and how geospatial research can inform responses to risks, hazards, and emergencies. GSC addresses vulnerability, resiliency, adaptation, and sustainability across broad domains that impact human welfare, such as health, urbanization, and population shifts.
The GSC was established in 1997 as a standing committee of the NASEM to foster research and development and to explore new directions in GIScience fields. For more information, visit http://dels.nas.edu/global/besr/GSC.
