Lunch & Learn - Erin Gill

The Urban Dynamics Institute Lunch & Learn Series will host Erin Gill, Director of Knoxville’s Office of Sustainability.  The title of her talk is Knoxville’s Energy & Sustainability Initiative: An Urban Dynamics Perspective.  Erin chairs UDI’s Cities Advisory Council (CAC) and is a member of the Science Advisory Board. This is the first in a series of talks where CAC members will introduce their city’s sustainability efforts, challenges they face and how UDI can address their challenges. 

This discussion will highlight the goals, activities, and successes of the City of Knoxville’s Energy & Sustainability Initiative, with a focus on topics of potential interest to Urban Dynamics Institute researchers. The conversation will highlight key city challenges and priorities, as well as successful past partnership with ORNL.  It will include insight on topics of priority interest to the City, as well as discuss how the City is positioned to incorporate research results to improve operations and/or policy.

Erin serves as director of the City of Knoxville’s Office of Sustainability. Appointed by Mayor Madeline Rogero in 2013, she oversees efforts to improve the environmental, economic, and social health of the Knoxville community. Her professional experience focuses on improving the efficiency and resilience of urban systems and included past roles at ICF International and EPA’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer. In 2014, she supported Mayor Rogero’s work on President Obama’s State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness & Resilience. Erin is vice-chair of the Tennessee Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and serves on the steering committee for the Urban Sustainability Directors Network’s Innovation Fund, which provides grant support for cities to collaborate to develop and spread high-impact solutions for advancing urban sustainability. She received a Master of Environmental Management degree from the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and a B.A. in History from the University of Notre Dame.
